The term “Christianity” can evoke many different emotions in our world right now. It seems like there are constantly new attacks against the faith, a lot of them actually coming from within. I’m sure you’ve heard about one new monstrosity or another happening inside the church walls. It’s easy to become discouraged to the state of despair over the condition of the church that is supposed to bring hope to this fallen world.

However, Jesus predicted that these terrible things would happen, and we must take heart. God is still seeking and saving the lost with overwhelming and unending love. He is drawing people to Himself and raising up righteous leaders from amongst His people. The redemptive work of God isn’t finished. He is in control. It is not the time to turn our back on the faith, but rather, to take a look at what it really means to be a Christian.

The Christian faith

Christianity is the word describing the faith in which people believe and follow Jesus. The Greek word for Christian is translated to mean “follower of Christ.” It does not describe a person with only a general belief in God or who was baptized as a baby, but is attributed to true believers who have been saved and are sustained by the Lord.

Jesus is both more simple and far better than we could ever imagine. He holds up the cosmos, yet came to earth as a babe. We could never comprehend all that Jesus is, and words can often fail us when we want to describe Him. Here are some verses that help me understand who He is.

Jesus is majestic and humble; powerful and kind. Here are some important theological points about who Jesus is and how He interacts with His creation:

• Jesus is fully God. He is not a created being; He has existed from the beginning with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. He is divine in nature and deserves all of our worship and praise.
• Jesus is fully man. He came to earth as a baby, born to the virgin Mary. He lived a perfect life on earth, experiencing the same temptations that we experience.
• Jesus is the perfect sacrifice for all time. Jesus gave His life so that whoever turns from their sins and believes in Him would be saved and in right relationship with God. The blood that He shed on the cross allows us to have peace with God and is the only way to have peace with God.
• No one can be saved except through Jesus.
• Jesus loves and sustains His disciples for all time.
• Jesus is preparing a place in heaven for His followers to dwell with Him forever.

The most essential thing for us to grasp concerning Jesus is the gospel. Jesus came to save sinners! How wonderful! Here are some key verses to help us understand why Jesus came and how we should respond.

The love of God quotes that will inspire your faith as a Christian

The whole reason God sent His Son to this earth is because He loves us. Sometimes it’s easy to think that God feels apathetic towards us. Other times, we may even fear that He is angry with us or doesn’t like us. Those who don’t know Jesus still have the wrath of God on them on account of their sins, but those who are saved can enjoy peace with God forever. While the wrath of God is on unbelievers, we were all once in that position.

Because of God’s great love, He sent His Son to drink the cup of  His wrath for us. Friend, if you are a Christian, you never have to wonder if God loves you. In fact, according to Ephesians 3:19, you could never even comprehend the love He has for you! One of the main aims of the Christian life should be to enjoy the love of God. You’ll never come to the end of it. Enjoy the complete acceptance and forgiveness of God. Rest in His care for you.

Romans 5:6-11 puts it this way:

From the Bible

The Bible, in its original form, is the perfect Word of God. It is trustworthy and true. Believers need the Bible to survive. (Of course, God sustains those believers with no access to the Bible, but our attitude towards the Word of God should be that of absolute necessity.) The Bible has so many wonderful purposes in our lives; how beautiful it is that the God of all creation would want to speak to us so intimately through this love-letter to the world! Scripture can be used to comfort, guide, teach, convict, shape, and grow us. God speaks to us through His written word and reveals things to us through His Holy Spirit as we grow in our faith. The Bible is how we get to know God better. When you open His Word, it’s like sitting down to a meal with the greatest, most faithful friend. We need the Bible to sustain and sanctify us. It feeds our souls and helps us to look more like Christ. As you grow in the knowledge of God, you will understand more and more the love of God that is beyond understanding. You will never come to the end of it. The believer who clings to their Bible from early life until death will always have more to learn from this living and active document.

The Bible is an essential piece of every Christian’s life. The amount and way that they interact with it can vary from person to person, and God will help each believer as they dive into the many mysteries of His word. If the Bible isn’t already a part of your weekly routine, I highly encourage you to sit down and formulate a plan of action. Doing so will change your heart, mind, and life forever.

Becoming a Christian

Salvation is the work of God; it is by grace alone through faith alone. A person becomes a true Christian when God draws them to Himself through the gospel. So what is the gospel?

God created humanity to be in perfect relationship with Him and each other. The first humans, Adam and Eve, brought sin into the world by disobeying God. This sin and every sin to follow severed the perfect relationships that God had established. The wrath of God was on sin, and it had to be punished and destroyed.

In God’s great mercy and sovereign foresight, He had a plan from the very beginning to destroy sin without destroying us. God put on flesh and came to earth through Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a perfect life; He never sinned once. Because He had no debt to pay of His own, He could pay the debt of the sins of the world on our behalf. Jesus took the wrath of God on Himself by dying on the cross. Three days later, He rose from the dead.

Jesus crushed sin and death. By trusting in this finished work of Jesus, we are justified, and the punishment that was on us is lifted. We receive this free gift of forgiveness and eternal life by believing. We believe that Jesus is God and He died on our behalf. This belief is expressed by a desire to obey Jesus and turn away from all sin, with the help of God.

The true believer lives for Christ. This is not a legalistic idea. Rather, it shows that our belief is genuine. The natural outpouring of believing that Jesus is God is obeying and following Him. The miraculous and wonderful thing is, however, that we are not judged by how well we can do this. When you believed in Jesus, His obedience was transferred to you, and God only sees you through the obedience of Jesus now, not your own. The Christian life is one of “already, but not yet.” We are already perfected because of what Jesus did for us, but it is also our life’s work to grow to look more and more like Him.

So, to become a Christian, one must:

• Hear the gospel
• Respond to the gospel with faith in Jesus
• Turn from sin and live for God

This is not an easy concept to grasp! I understand if you are still confused. I am praying for you as you grapple with this, and I encourage you to continue researching, talking with Christians, and opening the Bible to learn more. The gospel is simple enough for us to understand and believe, but so complex that we can always continue in our understanding of it. God will help you to understand whatever is necessary.

Living for God

The Christian life doesn’t end with salvation. It starts there! This is such great news. We don’t just get a God that wants to save us, but also love and be with us forever! There are two crucial aspects to living for God: obeying Him and enjoying Him. We could never perfectly obey all of God’s commands.

Thankfully, Jesus did this for us! However, as Christians, it is our life’s work to grow more and more like Christ each day. This looks like obeying His word, fighting sin, and asking for forgiveness when we fall short in these areas. God showed us infinite love in saving us; we were bought by the death of Jesus. We are not our own; our lives should be lived for Him.

However, this is not to be a cold, loveless duty to earn God’s love. We are already perfectly loved and accepted by God because of Jesus. The second part of living for God, enjoying Him, is something that we can often forget about. Neglecting this can reap harmful consequences as humans were made to be loved by God and know Him personally. In Ephesians 3:16-19, Paul’s prayer is my prayer for you:

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

We’ll never come to the end of God’s love for us. It is so vast that we can’t even comprehend it! God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him in which we come to know His great love for us more and more as we grow in Him. This means we get to enjoy His presence,  forgiveness, comfort,  provision, discipline, power, and blessings each and every day. In Psalm 16:11, King David declares of God, “In Your presence is fullness of joy.” As Christians, joy in the Lord should be a part of our daily living for God.

Spiritual growth is crucial in the Christian life! If you are feeling discouraged and wondering if you’ll ever be strong enough to grow in holiness and get rid of sin patterns, take heart! Did you know that when you became a Christian, the Holy Spirit made His home inside of you?

(John 14:23) It is not by your strength that you grow spiritually, but by this Spirit working in you. It is not a question of if you will grow spiritually as a Christian; it is inevitable! It is the plan and work of God to grow His children in holiness and understanding. This process is called sanctification, and God has never failed once to finish the work He started in His chosen people. (Philippians 1:6) 

Even though our growth ultimately comes from God, it is our job to come alongside Him and work together with Him. We plant seeds in our faith by reading the Bible, praying, meeting with other believers, and partaking in other spiritual disciplines. God takes that seed and makes something beautiful grow. It is also our job to fight sin daily.

Once again, it is ultimately God who gives us the power to overcome temptation, but we should be eager to take up spiritual arms and fight sin by the strength and grace of God, knowing that His mercy is always there for us when we fail. Never stop seeking to grow spiritually in your understanding of God and battle against sin. The Lord is in you and around you, rallying you on every step of the way.

The thing I love most about being a Christian is that I’m never alone. No matter what happens, no matter what trials come, no matter how big of a mess I get myself into, God is right there with me. Becoming a Christian doesn’t mean that your life will be devoid of problems; Jesus even guarantees that in this world we will have trouble. (John 16:33) The difference between the Christian and the nonbeliever, however, is that when the person who knows Christ lays their head down at night with burdens and sorrows to spare, they have Someone they can talk to.

Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) As a Christian, you have a constant friend in the Lord. You also have a perfect Father, Holy King, and guiding Shepherd. Friend, you are never alone in this life when you follow Christ. The God who has all the power in the Universe is on your side. Because of what Jesus did in your place, God is eternally for you. He loves you, He is with you, and you can come running to His open arms each and every day. Do not give up, friend. The one who upholds creation is the one who upholds your faith.

The importance of daily prayer on your walk with Christ.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We know that the Lord of all creation is on our side and is there for us to talk to whenever we need. Actually putting this into practice, however, is far more difficult. Even so, it is crucial. I’ve heard it said that your prayer life is indicative of your dependence on God. Think about that for a moment. Survey your recent prayers. Would they show that you are living a life of utter dependence on the Lord? Or would it show that you are trying to sustain yourself alone? Now, don’t despair.

We can all grow in the area of prayer. However, we have such a unique opportunity to bring our every care to God. In no other religion is their god so personal to bend their ear to hear the cries of their people. In no other religion is the god so powerful as to answer every cry in sovereign wisdom. We mustn’t take our God for granted. He is never annoyed or bothered by our requests.

Prayer is essential in our daily walk with Christ because we would never make it in our faith without the help of God. The devil is always prowling around, seeking a victim to devour. Prayer keeps us close to Christ and strengthens our faith as we trust in the Lord to work on our behalf and sustain us. Prayer also moves mountains when it comes to ministry.

We should constantly be on our spiritual knees for nonbelievers and people who are enduring struggles in their lives. We get to play a part in the redemptive story of God by praying for people and concerns around us. If prayer is not already a part of your daily walk with God, I would encourage you to set aside time each day to talk to your Father.

Conclusion

God is in control. In these uncertain times, we can trust in the one who died to make Christianity possible. Jesus gave it all for us; we are loved with an everlasting love. If you are already a Christian, I encourage you to live as a true follower of Christ, loving the Lord with all of your heart and loving people like Jesus did.
