The term “Christianity” can evoke many different emotions in our world right now. It seems like there are constantly new attacks against the faith, a lot of them actually coming from within. I’m sure you’ve heard about one new monstrosity or another happening inside the church walls. It’s easy to become discouraged to the state of despair over the condition of the church that is supposed to bring hope to this fallen world.

However, Jesus predicted that these terrible things would happen, and we must take heart. God is still seeking and saving the lost with overwhelming and unending love. He is drawing people to Himself and raising up righteous leaders from amongst His people. The redemptive work of God isn’t finished. He is in control. It is not the time to turn our back on the faith, but rather, to take a look at what it really means to be a Christian.

The whole reason God sent His Son to this earth is because He loves us. Sometimes it’s easy to think that God feels apathetic towards us. Other times, we may even fear that He is angry with us or doesn’t like us. Those who don’t know Jesus still have the wrath of God on them on account of their sins, but those who are saved can enjoy peace with God forever. While the wrath of God is on unbelievers, we were all once in that position.

Because of God’s great love, He sent His Son to drink the cup of  His wrath for us. Friend, if you are a Christian, you never have to wonder if God loves you. It feeds our souls and helps us to look more like Christ. As you grow in the knowledge of God, you will understand more and more the love of God that is beyond understanding. You will never come to the end of it. The believer who clings to their Bible from early life until death will always have more to learn from this living and active document.

The Bible is an essential piece of every Christian’s life. The amount and way that they interact with it can vary from person to person, and God will help each believer as they dive into the many mysteries of His word. If the Bible isn’t already a part of your weekly routine, I highly encourage you to sit down and formulate a plan of action. Doing so will change your heart, mind, and life forever.

Salvation is the work of God; it is by grace alone through faith alone. A person becomes a true Christian when God draws them to Himself through the gospel. So what is the gospel?

God created humanity to be in perfect relationship with Him and each other. The first humans, Adam and Eve, brought sin into the world by disobeying God. This sin and every sin to follow severed the perfect relationships that God had established. The wrath of God was on sin, and it had to be punished and destroyed.

In God’s great mercy and sovereign foresight, He had a plan from the very beginning to destroy sin without destroying us. God put on flesh and came to earth through Jesus Christ. Jesus lived a perfect life; He never sinned once. Because He had no debt to pay of His own, He could pay the debt of the sins of the world on our behalf. Jesus took the wrath of God on Himself by dying on the cross. Three days later, He rose from the dead.

Jesus crushed sin and death. By trusting in this finished work of Jesus, we are justified, and the punishment that was on us is lifted. We receive this free gift of forgiveness and eternal life by believing. We believe that Jesus is God and He died on our behalf. This belief is expressed by a desire to obey Jesus and turn away from all sin, with the help of God.

The true believer lives for Christ. This is not a legalistic idea. Rather, it shows that our belief is genuine. The natural outpouring of believing that Jesus is God is obeying and following Him. The miraculous and wonderful thing is, however, that we are not judged by how well we can do this. When you believed in Jesus, His obedience was transferred to you, and God only sees you through the obedience of Jesus now, not your own. The Christian life is one of “already, but not yet.” We are already perfected because of what Jesus did for us, but it is also our life’s work to grow to look more and more like Him.

So, to become a Christian, one must:

  • Hear the gospel
  • Respond to the gospel with faith in Jesus
  • Turn from sin and live for God

This is not an easy concept to grasp! I understand if you are still confused. I am praying for you as you grapple with this, and I encourage you to continue researching, talking with Christians, and opening the Bible to learn more. The gospel is simple enough for us to understand and believe, but so complex that we can always continue in our understanding of it. God will help you to understand whatever is necessary.

The Christian life doesn’t end with salvation. It starts there! This is such great news. We don’t just get a God that wants to save us, but also love and be with us forever! There are two crucial aspects to living for God: obeying Him and enjoying Him. We could never perfectly obey all of God’s commands.

Thankfully, Jesus did this for us! However, as Christians, it is our life’s work to grow more and more like Christ each day. This looks like obeying His word, fighting sin, and asking for forgiveness when we fall short in these areas. God showed us infinite love in saving us; we were bought by the death of Jesus. We are not our own; our lives should be lived for Him.

However, this is not to be a cold, loveless duty to earn God’s love. We are already perfectly loved and accepted by God because of Jesus. The second part of living for God, enjoying Him, is something that we can often forget about. Neglecting this can reap harmful consequences as humans were made to be loved by God and know Him personally. In Ephesians 3:16-19, Paul’s prayer is my prayer for you:

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. We’ll never come to the end of God’s love for us. It is so vast that we can’t even comprehend it! God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him in which we come to know His great love for us more and more as we grow in Him. This means we get to enjoy His presence,  forgiveness, comfort,  provision, discipline, power, and blessings each and every day. In Psalm 16:11, King David declares of God, “In Your presence is fullness of joy.” As Christians, joy in the Lord should be a part of our daily living for God.

Spiritual growth is crucial in the Christian life! If you are feeling discouraged and wondering if you’ll ever be strong enough to grow in holiness and get rid of sin patterns, take heart! Did you know that when you became a Christian, the Holy Spirit made His home inside of you?

(John 14:23) It is not by your strength that you grow spiritually, but by this Spirit working in you. It is not a question of if you will grow spiritually as a Christian; it is inevitable! It is the plan and work of God to grow His children in holiness and understanding. This process is called sanctification, and God has never failed once to finish the work He started in His chosen people. (Philippians 1:6) 

Even though our growth ultimately comes from God, it is our job to come alongside Him and work together with Him. Never stop seeking to grow spiritually in your understanding of God and battle against sin. The Lord is in you and around you, rallying you on every step of the way.

The importance of daily prayer on your walk with Christ.

We know that the Lord of all creation is on our side and is there for us to talk to whenever we need. Actually putting this into practice, however, is far more difficult. Even so, it is crucial. I’ve heard it said that your prayer life is indicative of your dependence on God. Think about that for a moment. Survey your recent prayers. Would they show that you are living a life of utter dependence on the Lord? Or would it show that you are trying to sustain yourself alone? Now, don’t despair.

We can all grow in the area of prayer. However, we have such a unique opportunity to bring our every care to God. In no other religion is their god so personal to bend their ear to hear the cries of their people. In no other religion is the god so powerful as to answer every cry in sovereign wisdom. We mustn’t take our God for granted. He is never annoyed or bothered by our requests.

Prayer is essential in our daily walk with Christ because we would never make it in our faith without the help of God. The devil is always prowling around, seeking a victim to devour. Prayer keeps us close to Christ and strengthens our faith as we trust in the Lord to work on our behalf and sustain us. Prayer also moves mountains when it comes to ministry.

We should constantly be on our spiritual knees for nonbelievers and people who are enduring struggles in their lives. We get to play a part in the redemptive story of God by praying for people and concerns around us. If prayer is not already a part of your daily walk with God, I would encourage you to set aside time each day to talk to your Father.

Conclusion
