While Jesus lives to this very day, He no longer lives on Earth as a human. He has permanently taken on His spiritual form so He can live in Heaven with God. Still, many wonder how old Jesus’s human form would be today if He were still alive today. Let’s take a closer look at the topic and learn more about the Lord and Savior.
Who is Jesus Christ?
Almost all major world religions agree that Jesus was a prophet, a great teacher, or the Son of God. The Bible, on the other hand, teaches us that Jesus was much more than a prophet, teacher, or devout human being. In fact, Jesus is part of the trinity – Father, Son, Holy Spirit – the three parts creating God. Jesus serves as the Son of God and the physical representation of Jesus in humankind.
According to the Bible, Jesus is literally God incarnate. In John 10:30, Jesus said, “because you, a mere man, claim to be God,” At first glance, this may not appear to be a claim to be God. However, notice the Jews’ reaction to His words. For blasphemy, “I and the Father are one,” they sought to stone Jesus (John 10:33).
In John 8:58, Jesus asserts that he existed before Abraham was born, an attribute frequently associated with God. In claiming pre-existence, Jesus applied a word for God to Himself—I AM (Exodus 3:14). Other scriptural hints that Jesus is God in the flesh include John 1:1, which says, “The Word was God,” and John 1:14, which says, “The Word became flesh.”
Jesus required both deity and humanity. Because He is God, Jesus was able to appease God’s wrath. Because Jesus was a man, He could die for our sins. The divine-human, Jesus, is the ideal Intercessor for God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). Only by believing in Christ can one be saved. He declared, “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).
What does the Bible say about Jesus?
The entire Bible focuses on God and His relationship with the Jewish people, His chosen people. Jesus comes into the story as early as Genesis 3:15, the first prophecy of the coming Savior, along with the reason why a savior was needed in the first place. Many verses about Jesus but John 3:16-21 make understanding Jesus’ purpose quite clear.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
What is the meaning of B.C. and A.D.?
Most people believe that the abbreviations B.C. and A.D. stand for “before Christ” and “after death,” respectively. This is only partially correct. First, B.C. stands for “before Christ,” while A.D. stands for “in the year of the Lord, shorted to Anno Domini (the Latin form).
Dionysius Exiguus, a Christian monk, proposed the idea of dating years from the birth of Jesus Christ in 525. Throughout the centuries that followed, the system became standardized under the Julian and Gregorian calendars and spread throughout Europe and the Christian world.
C.E. is an abbreviation for the “common (or current) era,” whereas BCE is an abbreviation for “before the common (or current) era.” These abbreviations have a shorter history than B.C. and A.D., but they do date back to the early 1700s. They have been used by Jewish academics for more than a century but became more popular in the latter half of the twentieth century, replacing BC/AD in a number of fields, most notably science, and academia.
When was Jesus born?
The Bible does not specify the date or year of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. However, the time frame becomes more manageable after a thorough investigation of historical chronology. We do know Jesus was born during the reign of King Herod, who died around 4 B.C. Furthermore, when Joseph and Mary fled with Jesus, Herod ordered the deaths of all boys under the age of two in the Bethlehem area, making Jesus less than two when Herod died. His birth would have taken place between 6 and 4 B.C.
While we do not know the exact day when Jesus was born, we celebrate on December 25th. Some clues in the Bible tell us Jesus was probably born between April and October, not at the end of the year. The exact date and time will remain a mystery, though, as no records hold this information, and we can only speculate.
When did Jesus die?
The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the most significant events that have occurred since the creation of the world. Several pieces of evidence point to the day Jesus died. We date the beginning of John the Baptist’s ministry to around A.D. 28 or 29 based on the historical statement in Luke 3:1 that John began preaching in the fifteenth year of Tiberius’ reign. Tiberius was crowned Emperor in 14 A.D. If Jesus had been baptized, His career would have lasted about three and a half years, beginning in A.D. 29 and ending in A.D. 33.
Pontius Pilate’s reign in Judea is generally accepted to have lasted from A.D. 26 to 36. The crucifixion took place on a Friday during Passover (Mark 14:12), which, when combined with the date of John’s ministry, places it on April 3 or 7, A.D. 33. Although, an earlier start to John the Baptist’s ministry is used to justify the later date.
How old was Jesus when He died?
According to Luke 3:23, Jesus’ earthly ministry lasted approximately three to three and a half years. Scholars generally agree that Jesus died between the ages of 33 and 34. According to the three Passover feasts mentioned in the Bible, Jesus likely spent about three and a half years in public ministry. It would imply that Jesus’ ministry concluded in the year 33.
As a result, Jesus was most likely crucified in A.D. 33. Another theory calculates the start of Jesus’ ministry differently, leading to a crucifixion date of A.D. 30. Both of these dates correspond to the historical data that Pontius Pilate ruled Judea from A.D. 26 to 36, and Caiaphas, the high priest, was also in office until A.D. 36. With a little math we can determine Jesus was around 36 to 37 years old when His earthly form died.
How old would Jesus Christ be right now?
Jesus’ exact age is unknown because he no longer exists as a human. If Jesus was born in 4 B.C., as is commonly assumed, he would be around 2056 years old right now. Remember that Jesus Christ is God in the flesh. However, He is ageless because, like the Father, He is eternal. Both John 1:1-3 and Proverbs 8:22-31 indicate that Jesus spent time in Heaven with the Father before coming to Earth as a child to redeem humanity.
Jesus is still alive
While Jesus died on the cross, three days later, He arose from the dead (Matthew 28:1-10). He stayed on Earth for around forty days before He ascended back to Heaven to sit next to God (Luke 24:50-53). When Jesus was resurrected, it was His heavenly form He returned in, which allowed Him also to ascend into Heaven. Someday He will return still very much alive to finish the fight (Revelation 20).
Jesus was fully human and fully divine before the Earth was created by God’s word, according to Philippians 2:5-11. (cf. John 1:1–3). God’s Son has never died; He is eternal. There was never a time when Jesus was not alive; even when His body was buried, He defeated death and continued to live, leaving the Earth and living instead in Heaven.
In Heaven, Jesus is physically present with the Father, the holy angels, and every believer (2 Corinthians 5:8). He sits at the right hand of the Father, higher than the heavens themselves (Colossians 3:1). Ephesians 4:10. “He always lives to intercede” on behalf of His earthly devotees to this day (Hebrews 7:25). And he promised to return (John 14:1–2).
The fact that the Lord is not currently present among us in the flesh does not make Him nonexistent. After instructing His disciples for 40 days, Jesus ascended to Heaven (Luke 24:50). It is impossible for a man who has died to enter Heaven. Jesus Christ is physically alive and watching over us right now.
Pray to Him whenever you want, and read His responses in the Scriptures whenever you want. The Lord wants you to bring anything that is bothering you to Him. He wishes to become a regular part of your life. Jesus is not a historical figure who lived and died. Instead, Jesus is God’s Son who took our punishment by dying for our sins, being buried, and then rising again.
