Bible Verses About The Resurrection

What does the Bible say about the Resurrection?

The Bible culminates in the life and death of Jesus Christ, who died to save us from our sins and will return to take us to everlasting life in heaven. Jesus Christ’s resurrection is the foundation of our Christian faith. This event, which took place about two thousand years ago, is the most well-documented fact in human history. Find answers to your questions about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and a few others below.

Christian quotes about the Resurrection

“Easter says you can put truth in a grave, but it won’t stay there. You can nail it to a cross, wrap it in winding sheets and shut it up in a tomb, but it will rise!” John Stott

“The Resurrection gives my life meaning and direction and the opportunity to start over no matter what my circumstances.” Robert Flatt.

“The best news of the Christian gospel is that the supremely glorious Creator of the universe has acted in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection to remove every obstacle between us and himself so that we may find everlasting joy in seeing and savoring his infinite beauty.” John Piper

“The stone was rolled away from the door, not to permit Christ to come out, but to enable the disciples to go in.” Peter Marshall

“The Crucifixion, Atonement, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ mark the beginning of a Christian Life, not the end of it.” Jeffrey R. Holland

“The greatest negative in the universe is the Cross, for with it God wiped out everything that was not of Himself: the greatest positive in the universe is the resurrection, for through it God brought into being all.” Watchman Nee

“The resurrection of Christ is one of the foundation stones of Christianity. It was the seal of the great work that He came on earth to do. It was the crowning proof that the ransom He paid for sinners was accepted, the atonement for sin accomplished, the head of him who had the power of death bruised, and the victory won.” J. C. Ryle

“Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in spring-time.” Martin Luther

“We understand and acknowledge that the Resurrection has placed a glorious crown upon all of Christ’s sufferings.” A. W. Tozer

What is the Resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Resurrection means someone died and then came back from the dead. As of yet in history, only one man has died and then come back to life for the purpose of saving the lives of everyone from death. Now God and Jesus both brought people back to life in the Bible, but that was to demonstrate their divinity, not to save all mankind from eternal death.

Jesus stated in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” The Messiah’s death had a purpose on the cross to sacrifice himself to save those who could not save themselves. Jesus predicted his own death (Matthew 17:22) down to the fact he would arise on the third day, and then he did!

Doubters of Jesus’ resurrection will most likely claim that He was hallucinating or that the early church put these things in His lips to force Him to teach the untruth that they had concocted. However, those who read the Gospels and come to the firm belief that the one who speaks so compellingly through these witnesses is not a fabrication of their imagination would be disappointed by this attempt to explain away Jesus’ own testimony to his resurrection from the dead.

15. Matthew 17:22-23 “When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief.”

Why is the Resurrection important to the Christian faith?

The resurrection proves God keeps His promises and gives us a way out of our sin. As sin keeps us separate from God, this means He provided a way for us to spend eternity with Him without forcing us to choose Him. Jesus’s death and resurrection provide the justification we need to stand before God and be found righteous despite our human nature.

By doing so, Jesus defeated death which no man had ever done before, and confirmed the truth of scripture and of Jesus as the Son of God. Furthermore, Jesus returning from the dead gives everyone the option to hope that we too will be resurrected and live eternally with God in heaven (1 Corinthians 15:20-22). We know when we stand before God, we will not be judged for our sins but by Jesus’s love for us, which is a much better deal (Acts 17:30-31).

"And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith." 1 Corinthians 15:14

17. John 20:8-10 “So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. 9 For they did not yet understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead. 10 So the disciples went away again to their own homes.”

18. 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.”

19. Acts 17:30-31 “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

20. 1 Corinthians 15:54–55 (ESV) “When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

21. Matthew 16:1-4 “The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.” Jesus then left them and went away.”

 22. Psalm 16:10 “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; You will not allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.”

23. Mark 10:34 (ESV) “And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”

27. Hebrews 10:11-14 (NIV) “Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”

28. 1 John 5:11–12 (ESV) “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

29. Acts 17:2-3 (NLV) “Paul went in as he always did. They gathered together each Day of Rest for three weeks and he taught them from the Holy Writings. 3 He showed them that Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead. He said, “I preach this Jesus to you. He is the Christ.”

34. Acts 2:36 (KJV) “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

35. Romans 7:4 “So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God.”

Who resurrected Jesus?

God resurrected Jesus according to Acts 2:24, but all three parts of the Trinity were involved as recorded in Galatians 1:1, 1 Peter 3:18, and Romans 1:4. In John 2:19, Jesus also says that He will rise from the grave (see also John 10:18). As a result, when asked who resurrected Jesus, we can say it was God. That is, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit were involved.

Additionally, Jesus declared, “I am the life and the resurrection” (John 11:25). He claimed to be the Resurrection Himself, and He claimed to have complete control over life and death (Revelation 1:18). Jesus is the Son of God. He may claim that because He is God, He has the authority to raise His body on the third day.

36. Acts 2:24 “But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for Him to be held in its clutches.”

37. 2 Corinthians 4:14 “knowing that the One who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in His presence.”

39. 1 Corinthians 6:14 (KJV) “And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.”

40. Galatians 1:1 “Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by a man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead.”

41. 1 Peter 1:21 “Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.”

42. Colossians 2:12 “For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.”

43. 1 Thessalonians 1:10 “and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.”

44. Acts 10:41 “He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.”

45. Acts 3:15 “You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this.”

46. John 2:19 “Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

47. John 10:18 “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

What is Resurrection Sunday?

Resurrection Sunday is the holiday commonly known as Easter but with a more applicable name. It does not matter if it is called Easter or Resurrection. The event and meaning of the resurrection are more important than the actual day or name. The date of the crucifixion and resurrection, on the other hand, is extremely significant. Jesus’s resurrection represents the conclusion of all that is meaningful in developing a relationship with God, both faith and fact.

The time, which fell shortly after “Passover” and during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, was chosen by God to emphasize the ultimate sacrifice He made for sinners. Christianity would be a hollow religion without this sacrifice. Every objective of Jesus Christ’s atonement for sin would be unfulfilled, and Christianity’s basis would crumble. As God passed over the Hebrews in the Old Testament with blood on the door (Exodus 12:29), now He passed over those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior taking away death.

48. Matthew 28:1 (ESV) “Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.”

49. Revelation 1:5 “and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood.”

50. Mark 16:2 “Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb.”

51. John 20:29 “Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

52. Luke 24:46-48 “He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things.”

53. John 20:19 “On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

54. Luke 24:1-3 “Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. 2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. 3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.”

55. Matthew 27:65-66 “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.”

56. Exodus 12:29 “At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well.”

57. Matthew 16:21 “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

The power of Resurrection Bible verses

One of the most significant occurrences in history was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus accomplished a crucial aspect of God’s plan for the life and future of every human being by rising from the dead and returning to eternal power at the right hand of the Father. “And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all” (Acts 4:33).

If Jesus had not been risen from the dead after living a spotless life, the only conclusion we could reach is that evil will always win and good will be annihilated. God’s kindness and justice are vividly demonstrated in the crucifixion and resurrection. Never underestimate the significance of Jesus Christ’s resurrection. It is the foundation of all our hopes, and ultimately the foundation of all humanity’s hopes (Hebrews 6:17-20).

56. Philippians 3:10 “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.”

57. Romans 14:9 “For this reason Christ died and returned to life, that He might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.”

58. Romans 1:4 “and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.”

59. Acts 4:33 “With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all.”

60. Hebrews 6:17-20 “Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

61. Ephesians 2:4-6 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”

62. Isaiah 25.8: “He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from off all faces.”

63. 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

64. Ephesians 1:19-20 “I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.”

What did Jesus mean when He said, “I am the Resurrection and the Life”?

Jesus said, “I am the Resurrection and the Life” because he is both. Without Christ, there is no resurrection, and without Christ, there is no eternal life. In addition, Jesus was making a statement about His divine nature. Jesus demonstrates that neither death nor time can stop Him.

Death has no final power over Him because He does more than give life; He is life. This spiritual life is given to individuals who believe in Jesus so that they can share in His victory over death (1 John 5:11-12). Believers in Jesus Christ will experience resurrection because death will not defeat them since they have the life Jesus provides (1 Corinthians 15:53-57).

65. John 11:25 “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.”

66. John 14:6 “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

67. 1 John 5:11-12 “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

68. Revelation 22:13 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

69. John 10:9 “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”

70. Colossians 1:15-18 “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

Death, burial, Resurrection

In Mark chapter 15, we read about the death of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The other apostles share the story as well in Matthew 27, Luke 23, and John 19. We leave of Jesus’ harrowing death, burial, and then his glorious resurrection proving scripture true and making everlasting life available to all who accept Jesus as their Lord.

Before Jesus was placed on the cross, he was betrayed by a friend, denied by another, questioned, slapped, forced to wear a crown, pierced, and much more. No one should ever have to go through what Jesus did, but he did it willingly to pay for our sins.

But death could not keep him down because three days after he was buried in a tomb, an angel told them, “Don’t be alarmed,” he said, “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of your into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.”

The idea is that the Christian Gospel is more than just the facts of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection; it is those truths as understood by the Scriptures. To put it another way, the death of Jesus must be understood in light of what Scripture says about him, who this Jesus was who died, why his death was so significant, what kind of death he died, and what he accomplished.

Similarly, the burial and resurrection must be understood in light of what Scripture says about his resurrection, why it was significant, what it proved, and how it relates to his exaltation to glory. We know the answer, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

71. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 “Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

72. Colossians 1:12-14 “and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

73. Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

74. Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”

75. Philippians 2:8 “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”

76. Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

77. Acts 16:31 “So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

78. John 10:28-30 “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.”

79. 1 John 4:15-16 “If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”

80. Acts 13:38 “Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.”

81. Romans 3:23-25 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.”

82. Ephesians 2:8 “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God.”

Why did Jesus have to die?

Jesus died to save us from our sins. Despite the fact that God expelled Adam and Eve from the garden, He did not abandon them. Instead, he prophesied that a Savior would come to vanquish the snake (Genesis 3:15). Until then, men would sacrifice innocent lambs as a sign of atonement for their sins and faith in a future Sacrifice from God who would take their punishment.

With men like Abraham and Moses, God reiterated His promise of the Sacrifice. The beauty of God’s flawless plan is that He provided the sole sacrifice (Jesus) capable of atoning for His people’s sins. God’s perfect Son fulfilled God’s perfect law’s flawless demand. It’s wonderful because of how simple it is. “God made Him (Christ), who knew no sin, to be sin for us, so that in Him we may become God’s righteousness” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

83. Romans 8:2 “because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

84. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

85. John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”

86. Ephesians 1:7 “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”

87. Matthew 20:28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

88. 1 Peter 2:23-24 “When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

89. Isaiah 64:6 “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.”

90. John 3:17 “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

91. Revelation 12:10 “Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before our God day and night, has been hurled down.”

Bible verses about the Resurrection of the dead

In 1 Corinthians 15:12-18, Paul says, “But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.”

Jesus died so we could have a way to salvation despite our sinfulness. When Jesus returns on a cloud, he will gather up his chosen people from the entire earth to take them to heaven (Mark 13:26). Because of Jesus, we can be resurrected from death to eternal life with God, and this has been God’s plan since the beginning to provide a way to save us from ourselves.

92. Romans 6:8-11 “Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”

How many resurrections are there in the Bible?

Beyond Jesus’ miraculous resurrection, he brought many people back to life, including twelve total. A couple of importance are yet to come, including the Two Witnesses (Revelation 11:7-11), saints and martyrs (Revelations 20:4), The Church (1 Corinthians 15:23and the wicked (Revelation 20:5). Here is a list of the resurrections in the Bible:

In Zarephath, the widow’s son is resurrected (1 Kings 17:17–22).

The Shunammite’s son is raised from the dead (2 Kings 4:18–37).

The man who was placed into Elisha’s grave comes back to life (2 Kings 13:20)

Jairus’ daughter’s resurrection (Mark 5:41)

The young man’s resurrection at Nain (Luke 7:14)

Lazarus’ Resurrection (John 11:38–44)

During the crucifixion, unnamed saints rose from the dead (Matthew 27:52–53).

Tabitha/Dorcas’ Resurrection (Acts 9:36–42)

Eutychus’ Resurrection (Acts 20:7–12)

103. 1 Kings 17:17-22 “Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?” 19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 Then he cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!” 22 The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.”

104. John 11:38-44 “Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

105. Luke 7:14-15 “Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” 15 The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.”

When will the Resurrection take place?

When Christ returns to earth at the end of the Tribulation period (His Second Coming), the resurrection will take place. After the rapture, the Tribulation is the next event in God’s timeline after the Church Age. This will be a time of awful judgment on the world, as detailed in Revelation chapters 6-18 in detail.

Even though all Church Age believers will have died, millions of individuals left on earth will come to their senses and accept Jesus as their Savior at this time. Unfortunately, the majority of them will perish due to their faith in Jesus (2 Thessalonians 1:9). Those who die during the Tribulation as followers of Jesus will be resurrected at Christ’s return and reign with Him for a thousand years during the Millennium (Revelation 20:4, 6). Job, Noah, Abraham, David, and even John the Baptist will also be resurrected at this time.

106. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 “and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.”

107. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”

Resurrections in the Old Testament

The New Testament often tells of the glorious hope of our Lord’s return to raise the dead and destroy death, the final adversary (1 Corinthians 15:26). It may appear that the hope of resurrection is unique to the New Testament, but the Hebrews waited for thousands of years for a messiah who would fulfill prophecy, including coming back from the dead. From the beginning, God has given his people hope in the resurrection.

The most important Old Testament predictions about Jesus concern his death and resurrection. Jesus fulfilled over forty prophecies proving himself the authentic Messiah. In Psalm 16:10, we learn, “Because you will not abandon me to this realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.” Furthermore, in Psalm 49:15, the Bible states, “But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.” Both of these verses were confirmed in Matthew 28 and Acts 2.

108. Psalm 49:15 “But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.”

Resurrections in the New Testament

Of course, the most important resurrection in the New Testament is that of Jesus Christ. The others are listed above and were performed by Jesus himself. Furthermore, he will resurrect all those how chose him when he returns in his second resurrection when Jesus raises the dead believers (1 Corinthians 15:20) and the wicked (Revelation 20:12-13). “What great rejoicing will attend the first resurrection! What great anguish at the second! What a responsibility we have to share the Gospel! “And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire” (Jude 23).

109. 1 Corinthians 15:20 “But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”

110. Revelation 20:12-13 “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.”

Conclusion

Jesus died on the cross to bear our sins and then came back to life, proving he was the Son of God. We no longer need to take the punishment for our sins as Jesus did this for us and will stand before God, proclaiming we are righteous through the shedding of his blood. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today to accept this incredible gift given to you freely from the love of God.
