Donald Trump versus Kamala Harris from a Christian perspective

What guides your decisions when you go to the voting booth?

Do you consider how each candidate aligns with Biblical values? God blesses a nation whose rulers and people obey Him.

If you fear the LORD and serve Him and obey His voice, and if you do not rebel against the command of the LORD, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the LORD your God, then all will be well..” (1 Samuel 12:14, BSB)

Many Christians feel that both presidential candidates are so flawed that they can’t vote for either. Is it right to stay home and sit this election out?

If we don’t vote, we’re letting other people – who may not have Christian values – decide our future. Thus, we must prayerfully consider how each candidate stands. Will they rebel against God’s commands for morality and wise leadership?

Remember, God uses imperfect people. The Bible is full of examples! The question is, which candidate is more likely to support Biblical values?

Is either candidate a Christian?

Kamala Harris grew up with a Hindu mother and a father confirmed in the Anglican church. A neighbor took Kamala and her sister to a Church of God. Her mother also took the girls to her Hindu temple. Kamala’s church in San Francisco is the Third Baptist Church. Her pastor, Rev. Amos Brown, supports LGBTQ rights and same-sex marriage. Harris occasionally attends synagogue services with her Jewish husband. Harris has not publicly said anything about placing her faith in Christ for salvation and being baptized as a Christian.

Donald Trump was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church. In 2020, he said he was no longer Presbyterian but a non-denominational Christian.[i] In his first term as president, he visited evangelical and Pentecostal churches. He attended Christmas and Easter services at an Episcopal church. Trump had several evangelical advisors, including James Dobson, Robert Jeffress, Greg Laurie, and Paula White. He also chose Mike Pence as his Vice-President, a strong evangelical Christian. Since leaving office, he has not regularly attended services. Trump identifies as a “very proud Christian”; however, his understanding of salvation is not Biblical. He recently stated, “If I’m good, I’m going to heaven, and if I’m bad, I’m going to someplace else.”[ii]

We need to pray for the salvation of both candidates!

How do we define Biblical values?

Biblical values are what the Bible says we should do and not do. We can and should compare each candidate’s support of Biblical values.

Since both have been in office, we can consider their track record. As Vice-President, Harris recently said on The View that she was part of “every major decision” in the Biden administration and that “not a thing comes to mind” when asked what she would do differently. [iii]

What does the Bible say about government leaders?

  • “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” (Proverbs 29:2, KJV)
  • “By justice, a king brings stability to the land, but a man who exacts tribute demolishes it.” (Proverbs 29:4, BSB)
  • “It is He who changes the times and the periods; He removes kings and appoints kings” (Daniel 2:21a, NASB)

Right to Life

  • “For You created my innermost parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and skillfully formed in the depths of the earth. Your eyes have seen my formless substance, and in Your book were written all the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. How precious also are Your thoughts for me, God!” (Psalm 139:13-17, NASB)

Harris strongly supports abortion. She uses her power to persecute those advocating for unborn children:

  • When she was attorney general of California,  pro-lifer David Daleiden blew the whistle on Planned Parenthood selling the body parts of aborted babies. Harris brought unfounded charges against Daleiden while refusing to investigate Planned Parenthood.[iv]
  • Harris blasted the Hyde Amendment in 2020, which forbids using federal funds for abortions. In 2019, she co-sponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act. If it had passed, it would have eliminated any restrictions on abortions.
  • The Biden-Harris administration weaponized federal agencies against pro-life supporters. Fifteen FBI agents brandishing M-16 guns and battering rams launched a dawn raid on the home of Mark Houck. They chained him to a table for six hours. They charged him with violating the FACE Act for an altercation with a man outside an abortion clinic who was threatening Houck’s son. After a costly trial, a jury acquitted Houck of all charges in January 2023.[v]
  • “Overall, the DOJ brought at least 26 charges against pro-life individuals under the FACE Act in 2022.” What about abortion activists who obstructed or vandalized pro-life pregnancy centers after the Dobbs decision that year? Zero were prosecuted.[vi]
  • Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, has partnered with “Men4Choice.”  They are telling men to vote for Harris (which is an abortion vote) because it is “affecting man’s ability to plan their lives.”[vii]
  • In March 2024, Harris became the first vice president to make an official visit to Planned Parenthood. After touring the facility, she praised the abortionists for giving “healthcare” and “true leadership.”[viii]

Trump actively supported life for unborn children as president.

  • He appointed three justices to the Supreme Court who helped end Roe vs. Wade in 2022, upending the “constitutional” right to abortion.
  • He was the first president (in office) to speak at the “March for Life” in D.C. in 2020.
  • Trump is firmly against late-term abortions, but not necessarily abortions early in a pregnancy. He supports exceptions to abortion laws for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. He believes decisions on abortion should be made by the states and the vote of the people – not at a national level.

LGBTQ

  • “You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22, BSB)
  • “. . .  God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations with women and burned in their desire toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.” (Romans 1:26-27, NASB)
  • “A woman shall not wear man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.” (Deut. 22:5)

Trump passed the 2017 executive order “Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty. ” It said that the First Amendment provided for “conscience-based objections.” An example is the baker who refused to design a wedding cake for a gay couple because of his religious beliefs. Trump also banned transgender people from enlisting in the Armed Forces. Why? Their surgeries and medications would have to be paid for by us, the taxpayers.

Now, Trump is promising to cut federal funds for schools “pushing gender ideology on our children.” He says he will “keep men out of women’s sports.”[ix] He has vowed to “cease all [federal] programs that promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age.” He also promises to introduce a new law mandating that “the only genders recognized by the United States government are male and female — and they are assigned at birth.” [x]

Harris has firmly pushed the LGBTQ agenda throughout her career. As attorney-general, she refused to defend California’s ban on same-sex marriage. She worked with the federal courts to let males use girl’s bathrooms and locker rooms. In 2019, Harris pushed for gender transition surgeries for federal prisoners and illegal migrants. “Transition treatment is a medical necessity, and I will direct all federal agencies responsible for providing essential medical care to deliver transition treatment.” [xi] Who pays for these surgeries? Us – the taxpayers!

The Biden-Harris administration is the most pro-LGBTQ administration in  U.S. history. It passed the “Respect for Marriage Act,” allowing same-sex marriage. [xii]

In June 2023, the Biden-Harris team came after parents trying to keep inappropriate books out of school libraries and classrooms. What kind of books? One is Gender Queer, which explicitly describes a man raping a boy under the age of consent. Another is This Book Is Gay, which explains to kids how to use adult apps to hook up for sexual encounters. However,  Biden-Harris say, “Book bans can create a hostile school environment [that] may violate federal civil rights laws.”[xiii]

Right now, the Biden-Harris administration is passing a new rule requiring foster homes to affirm children’s gender confusion. Foster parents who support biological reality could have their foster children taken away. [xiv]

Freedom of Speech and Religion

  • “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1, ESV)

Trump declared that church was an “essential service” during the COVID lockdowns.[xx] As president, Trump ensured students had the right to pray in school. “The new guidance makes clear that students can read religious texts or pray during recess and other non-instructional periods, organize prayer groups, and express their religious beliefs in their assignments.” President Trump overturned an Obama policy that said religious organizations could not get disaster relief from the government.

Harris sponsored the “Do Not Harm Act” as California’s senator. She planned to gut the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). She also co-sponsored the “Equality Act.” These bills discriminated against Americans holding traditional religious beliefs on issues like abortion, marriage, and gender. It would have crippled faith-based organizations serving vulnerable populations like foster children and the homeless.

In 2018, Harris tried to block the appointment of a federal judge nominee because he belonged to a Catholic service organization that opposed abortion. She said it made him unfit. Harris ignored Article VI of the Constitution, which says a religious test cannot be used as a qualification for government office.

In her current run for the presidency, Harris “seems unwilling to address the concerns of theologically conservative believers and quick to abandon religious freedom when it interferes with her other values, such as abortion access or LGBTQ rights.”[xxi]

National Debt

  • “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7, ESV)
  • “For the Lord your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.” (Deuteronomy 15:6) (this is a promise to Israel, but it emphasizes how the borrower is ruled by the lender)
  • The Bible doesn’t say it is a sin to borrow (whether a person or a government). Still, it warns about the danger and vulnerability it brings. National debt reduces economic growth and raises interest rates and taxes. It can plunge a country into a fiscal crisis.
  • This helpful article explains national debt from a Christian perspective: https://www.christianitytoday.com/2023/05/kristian-debt-ceiling-economic-crisis/

Trump raised the national debt by 6.5 trillion, not the 8.4 trillion alleged by CNN debate moderator Jake Tapper (he was quoting from the leftist Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which is not nonpartisan). Trump saved $3.9 trillion through economic growth. Trump inherited budget deficits from Obama due to increases in Social Security and Medicare that automatically continued to raise the national debt. He repeatedly submitted budgets that would reduce the deficit,  but they didn’t pass in Congress.[xxii] The unprecedented, unexpected expenditures during the Covid pandemic drove the debt up by $3.9 trillion. Fifteen percent of the debt was not spent but placed in reserve.

The Biden-Harris administration spent all that reserve money and another $7 trillion. Most likely, that amount will be $9 trillion by the end of Biden’s term. It would have been even more, but the House blocked some horrendous spending.[xxiii]  Several policies of the Biden-Harris team that drove debt so high include doing away with work requirements for SNAP and Medicaid recipients, transitioning over 600,000 Americans from employer health coverage to Obamacare, pausing student loan repayment, and canceling student loan debt.[xxiv]

Conclusion

Regardless of who gets elected, we are commanded to pray for that person! We don’t have to like them or agree with them, but we must pray for them. Pray they will be saved, sanctified, and rule according to God’s Word. Pray that “Daniels” will surround them – who will give them wise and godly counsel.

  • “First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone—for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, BSB)

We are also commanded to be submissive to our government leaders (with one exception).

  • “Remind the believers to submit to rulers and authorities, to be obedient and ready for every good work” (Titus 3:1)
  • “Every person is to be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.” (Romans 13:1, NASB)

What’s the one exception? When the government tries to force something that goes against what God says to do.

  • “But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’” (Romans 13:1)
